Telling your child that a sibling is on the way is one of the sweetest family conversations, and one that often brings doubt: tell them too early and the wait feels endless; wait too long and the child might find out from the growing belly, grandparents, or a casual comment—and feel left out.
For children up to 5 years old, the best time is usually when the bump starts to show—around the fourth or fifth month. Before that, nine months is a stretch they can’t really imagine. Make sure to tell your child before others they see regularly do—like their teacher or grandma—so the news doesn’t slip out before they hear it straight from you.
Keep it simple and clear. “There’s a baby growing in mommy’s belly. He or she will be born after your birthday. It’s going to be your brother or sister.” Avoid saying, “You’re going to get a new little friend” — babies don’t play right away, and when that promise goes unfulfilled, it can be disappointing in those first months. Tell the truth: at first, the baby will sleep, cry, and nurse; playing comes later.
Put a calendar on the fridge so they can mark the weeks. If the clinic allows it, arrange a visit to the ultrasound. Let your child pick out an outfit or a toy to be “their gift to the baby.” The more the wait has little projects like these, the less anxious your child will feel.
Books about welcoming a sibling help, especially when the main character is named after your child and the baby has their chosen name included. Reading this story night after night, where they prepare the home, meet their sibling, and find their new role, makes the arrival something familiar and exciting.
Your child doesn’t have to be happy with the news right away. They need to feel included. Jealousy will come and go; feeling invited in from the very start stays with them.
