Adjusting to school is one of the first big changes in a child’s life, and it doesn’t just happen on day one: it unfolds over two to four weeks, with ups and downs. Knowing what to expect helps you avoid two pitfalls: giving up too soon or pushing through when something really isn’t right.
All this means your child is processing a new routine, lots of new people, and hours away from those they know. It’s not a sign that the school is wrong or that you are.
Keep routines consistent: same bedtime, same goodbye ritual, and if possible, the same person picking them up. Talk about school concretely, naming the teacher and classmates. And be sure to have some cuddle time at the end of the day before any questions.

It happens. Some kids need a different school, a smaller class size, or a different teaching style. Changing schools isn’t a failure—it’s listening. But give the first school a full month before deciding, because week three is often the hardest, and week four is the turning point.
