Some children arrive at the park and immediately start playing with everyone. Others hang back, watching for twenty minutes, then leave without playing with a single child. The second isn’t a problem: it’s a temperament. But they might need a bridge, and you can build it without pushing.
A shy child observes before jumping in. They need time to feel safe, and once they do, they play just like anyone else. This is different from a child who prefers to play alone (and is happy that way) or one who avoids all contact out of anxiety (which is worth discussing with a pediatrician). The shy child wants to join but doesn’t know how.
Practice at home like a game: “Can I play?”, “My name is Ana, what’s yours?”, “Do you want to play with me?” Shy kids often don’t know what to say, and having these lines ready cuts the fear in half.
Stories where the main character meets someone different, a little strange, slowly gets close, and discovers friendship practice exactly what shy kids need to live through. If the main character is your child—using their name—they’ll see themselves doing what they haven’t dared yet, bringing that day closer.
Shy children tend to have few friends but deep friendships. They don’t need to be the most popular—they need a friend. And with a bridge and a little time, they’ll make one.
