How to Help Your Child Feel Like Part of the Family (Not Just Cared For)

Video calls can only go so far—kids get restless fast. Creating meaningful bonds across the miles takes rituals: weekly storytimes, showing off drawings, shared recipes, and a way for grandparents to share the grandchild’s library. Here’s how to turn distance into connection.

More and more grandparents live far away from their grandkids: in another city, a different state, or even another country. Video calls help, but if you’ve tried, you know: a 3-year-old usually runs off after just two minutes. Long-distance bonds don’t grow from chat alone; they grow from rituals.
Little kids don’t just talk—they do things together. A call where grandma asks, “How was school?” often ends in silence. But a call where grandma and grandchild do something together—reading, singing, showing a toy, or making a craft—lasts as long as the activity.
The best ritual is reading a story together, and it’s easier when grandma and grandchild have the same book on their screens, each on their side. A digital library shared with a simple code, no password needed, lets grandma open exactly the story the child has, reading while the child follows along. If the story is personalized—with the grandchild’s and grandma’s names inside—it turns the call into a special event.
Parents are the bridge. Schedule the call like an important appointment. Get the child ready (“Grandma’s going to read soon”). Then step away: kids behave differently when parents aren’t watching.
Don’t take it personally if attention is short. At age 3, five good minutes are better than twenty dragged out. Talk about what interests the child, not what you want to know. Keep repeating the same ritual, even if it seems it’s not working; repetition is what the child holds on to.
What the child remembers from grandparents isn’t physical presence—it’s regular presence. A grandma who reads every Sunday is more present than a grandpa who lives nearby but visits every two months. Distance is not absence. Absence is lack of ritual.
