Among all the habits parents try to teach, gratitude offers the best bang for your buck: it takes just one minute, needs no materials, and transforms how your child (and you!) end the day.
After the story, just before turning off the light, everyone shares three good things from their day. That’s it. “Thank you for the sunshine at the park. For grandma’s call. For the macaroni.” Parents say theirs, too. One minute. Lights off.
Kids tend to focus on what they didn’t get: the toy they didn’t receive, the friend who didn’t want to play. This ritual trains the mind to look for the good stuff, and with repetition, they start noticing it throughout the day—so there’s something to share at night. Studies with school-age kids show simple gratitude practices link to greater happiness, optimism, and fewer complaints—and parents often see the change before the research does.
The ritual turns into a prayer with one word: “Thank You, God, for the sun, for grandma, for the macaroni.” Little ones grasp God more easily through gratitude than any other doorway—thanking is their first prayer.
A story where your child’s name is part of the adventure, discovering reasons to be thankful for family, home, friends, and nature, ending the night with thanks, is the most natural way to introduce the ritual. After the story, the three good things come all on their own.
After one month, your child might say in the afternoon, “This will be one of my three things.” After a year, the way they tell their day shifts. And many years later, as an adult, what they’ll remember most from childhood nights is the dim light and the question: “What was good today?”
