Few things inspire as many questions as an afternoon at the beach. And those questions are great—you’re helping your child make sense of something vast. Honest, simple answers feed their curiosity; a plain "just because" snuffs it out. Here are some common questions, with answers tailored for kids between 4 and 8 years old.
Rain falls on mountains, flows through rivers, and along the way, it carries tiny bits of salt from the rocks and soil. Rivers bring that salt to the sea. Sea water evaporates and turns into clouds, but the salt stays behind. This has been happening for millions of years, and that’s how the salt has built up.
From the wind. The wind blows across the water’s surface and pushes it, creating waves that travel all the way to the shore. Big waves come from strong winds, sometimes very far away in the middle of the ocean, and arrive days later.
They rest, but they don’t close their eyes because they don’t have eyelids. Some stay still in a corner, while others keep swimming slowly. Sharks have to keep swimming even while resting so water can pass over their gills.
The Moon pulls on the sea water with its force (the same kind that keeps us on the ground, but coming from the Moon). When the Moon is on one side of the Earth, the water there rises. The Earth spins, so the tide rises and falls twice every day.
Mountains, valleys, and places deeper than the tallest mountain is tall. Down there it’s dark and cold, and animals live that make their own light. We know less about the ocean floor than about the surface of the Moon.
No—they’re mammals, just like us. They breathe air (that’s why they come to the surface and blow out a spout), carry their babies inside their bodies, and feed them with milk.
When your child asks lots of questions about the sea, it’s time for a story set in the ocean: a child who finds a friend from the sea, explores their world, and learns how to take care of the water and animals. If the hero is your child, with their name, that afternoon’s curiosity becomes the night’s adventure.
Say: "I don’t know. Shall we find out together?" That’s one of the best things a child can hear from an adult: knowing isn’t the end—it’s the beginning.
