Between ages 3 and 7, many kids go through the "dinosaur phase": they know names with ten letters, correct adults, and ask to watch the same documentary every day. This isn’t just a passing fad: researchers call it intense interest, and it has lasting effects on how your child learns.
Three reasons come together. They’re huge and scary, but they’re not around anymore, so the fear feels safe. They come with a whole system to master: names, sizes, what they ate, when they lived. And mastering that means your child knows something adults don’t—something rare and wonderful at age four.
Kids with intense interests build bigger vocabularies, stronger focus, and better skills at organizing information (categories, comparisons, sequences). They also learn to look things up: in books, videos, or asking adults. These skills stick long after the dinosaurs have gone.
A story where your child—named as themselves—finds a lost dinosaur, cares for it, and helps it get home ties everything together: interest, reading, and empathy. It’s one of the most requested repeats, and each time strengthens the message: I can take care of those who need me.
It usually fades when school starts and other interests and friends take over. Don’t force it or feel sad. Keep the books—they’ll come back in new ways, and the way your child learned will stay with them forever.
