Reading in Two Languages: Tips for Bilingual Families

You don’t need an hour or a full bookshelf. Just a set time, ten minutes, and a book your child picks: how to start today and keep it going for months.

Most families who don’t read together aren’t lacking the desire—they just think they don’t have the time. Ten minutes a day, at the same time, build the habit more than an hour on the weekend. What really matters is consistency, not length.
Habits form through repetition, not intensity. Ten minutes every day for a month means thirty reading sessions. Your child starts to expect it, ask for it, and choose the book. When they’re the one requesting it, the habit is established—and from there, it grows all on its own.
The best time is one that fits naturally into your routine: after bath, before bedtime, right after dinner. Tying reading to something that already happens every day ensures it happens too. For most families, that’s bedtime.
The first book sets the tone. Choose one your child will want to hear again: short, rhythmic, with a character they like. A story where they’re the star, featuring their name and family members, is often the safest bet—because who can resist a story all about themselves?
Your child will start asking for it. Then you can expand: a new book each week, a visit to the library, or your child “reading” the story they know by heart. What started as ten minutes becomes their favorite time of day—and years later, the sweetest memory.
